5 Inbound Marketing Mistakes You Are Making

I wish it wasn’t true. I wish I could tell you that you’re doing everything right in your marketing efforts and that your revenue is destined to keep on climbing year after year because you’ve become the marketing legend of your own era.

Unfortunately, if you’re reading this, you know something isn’t working with your inbound marketing efforts. Perhaps your site traffic is slow, or your visitors aren’t converting, or your social media accounts are a wasteland of unseen posts.

Mistake #1: You’re self-centered

This is a HUGE mistake. When thinking about site content, social posts, and copy, some company owners think more about the effect it will have on their business rather than what their prospects want to read and how they want to feel.

Mistake #2: You Don’t Promote Your Content

So you’ve built this beautiful content offer. You’ve slaved over your ebook (or checklist, or video…), created your landing pages and emails, and now you’re ready to see the conversions flood in.

Unfortunately, this is not a case of “If you build it, they will come.” You must promote, promote, promote. And when you’re done that, promote some more.

Here’s a case in point. One client had a particular blog post that was getting a decent amount of organic traffic. We decided to take advantage of that and create several assets based on the post. We carefully used keywords in landing pages, creating CTAs, and scheduled out several engaging social posts for the month.

Here’s what happened: Nothing. Nothing happened. At least, for a few weeks. Then, the social posts started getting shared by the right people. Traffic and conversions were up. So we started driving more traffic to the blog post via social media.

Today, that blog post is the number one driver of site traffic for that client.

The lesson? Just when you think you’ve promoted your offer enough, promote it some more.

Mistake #3: You Hire an Intern to Manage Your Marketing and/or Social Media

You may reason that since you don’t know much about social media, it would be prudent to hire a younger person at a low hourly rate (or for free) to manage your social presence.

Let’s be clear. Just because someone is on Snapchat every 20 seconds doesn’t mean they can handle your social media accounts.

Social media posts are not only about making connections; they’re about motivating the viewer. Motivating a person requires the use of carefully-crafted copy. Ultimately, you want to use social media as a tool to drive traffic back to your site, so put that tool in qualified hands.

Mistake #4: You Don’t Create Enough Content

Yes, creating content takes time. And, yes, you need to do it anyway.

Original content hosted on your site not only positions you as a reputable business, but it gives you the spark to your social media fire.

Did you write a new blog post? Well, now you have something to tweet about. Did you create a new ebook or checklist? Now you can drive traffic to the landing page, building your subscriber list at the same time.

Mistake #5: You Don’t Follow Up with Email Marketing

This one takes the cake. It could be the most famous yet deadly inbound marketing mistake. Well, not deadly, per se, but at least disastrous for your business.

Having a subscriber list that you don’t email is akin to having hundreds or thousands of people in your brick and mortar store — then ignoring all of them. Yes, they may buy something. But, you’re missing out on a ton of sales that are just at your fingertips. Literally.

So get out your CRM, dust it off, and start sending your contacts some helpful emails. Remember all that content you created? Yeah, give them that.
