Stop it! 5 Social Media Mistakes You are Making Right Now

As a community manager, I know firsthand that social media is a rough landscape. Word something wrong, make a small spelling error, and hordes of people- followers or not, regram, retweet, or just make prods at your company, making them the laughingstock of the webisphere. Granted, there are some errors that just happen, no matter how careful you are, but in this article, I’m going to help your business stand out from the others and avoid simple social media mistakes.

1: You Update Your Social Channels Haphazardly.

man-311353_1280You’re a busy business owner. You barely have time to take a break, let alone tweet or post at strategic hours of every day. So, you adopt a “when I have time for it” attitude, and only post an update when you’re in your downtime in non-working hours. When you realize this doesn’t work, you tell one of your trusty employees that it’s now their job to man the networks.

Why is this a big mistake?

Not all of your fans or followers are online at the same time. You’re not going to reach even a fraction of them by taking the “I’ll post when I feel like it” attitude. And when you ask Joe Trusted Employee to manage your online social presence, he’s going to be just as lost as you. He’s got a job that you’ve hired him for already; do you really expect he’ll put the same amount of dedication and time into tweeting that he does the job he’s really there for? I think you already know the answer to this.

2: You don’t double check your updates.

We’ve already covered a series on social media management mistakes, so I’m not going to spend an abundant amount of time on this point.

If you’re using a scheduling tool (which I sincerely hope you are if you’re serious about maintaining a social stance online), keep up with what’s going out. If there’s a major news item that happens that conflicts with a particular update, delete it or postpone it until the timing is right. On the other end of this is, make sure that your updates are grammatically correct and free of spelling errors. We all know there are internet trolls out there dying to take a poke at things like this-let’s make sure they don’t get the opportunity with your company.

3: You post the same thing. ALL. THE. TIME.

etc-682613_1280I know, I know. Studies show and analytics show that photos perform really well online. They say a picture says a thousand words. While I certainly agree you should post well-thought out photos, remember the old adage: variety is the spice of life. So don’t just post one kind of status update to your social feeds; vary it by posting links, videos, infographics, quotes, photos, etc., in short, anything that fits your overall brand impression.

4: #You #Don’t #Use #Hashtags #Correctly

The above title is comical, isn’t it? Well, if you don’t want your company to be laughed at, please use hashtags correctly. Understand which ones your industry uses, which ones will help you gain the most impressions, and use those. Don’t just jump on the hashtag bandwagon to get a free ride, because you’ll almost always fall off.

5: Don’t Fight Fire with Fire.

I love the saying: “A moment of patience in a moment of anger saves a hundred moments of regret” or something along those lines. If you’re faced with negative criticism online, either because of something you’re responsible for or an internet troll has found you, take a deep breath. Don’t respond in anger, lashing out for the world to see. Take a step back, look at the big picture, and try to understand both the issue and the reason behind the harsh words. Then, either respond accordingly, or not at all.

Bonus Error: You Don’t Understand the Platform

A status update is not a tweet, and a tweet is not a blog post. Quality matters, and if you don’t know how to properly use the social platform you’re posting to, it shows. Your followers will see that “you just don’t get it” and unfollow you. So take some time each month or week to brush up on new features of your favorite publishing platforms,
